(LAS VEGAS, NV) – The humble chef's toque, a symbol of the culinary arts for centuries, is getting a 21st-century upgrade. At this year's International Restaurant & Catering Expo, tech startup "CulinaryIQ" unveiled the "Smart Toque," a connected chef's hat designed to enhance kitchen safety and efficiency.
The Smart Toque looks like a traditional high-toque but is embedded with subtle technology. It features an integrated bone conduction speaker and microphone for clear, hands-free communication, allowing chefs to take orders or coordinate with team members without shouting over kitchen noise. More impressively, a small, removable thermal sensor module can be attached to the brim, monitoring ambient temperature near cooking stations and alerting the wearer to potential overheating or fire hazards.
"We wanted to honor the tradition of the chef's uniform while solving real-world problems in a modern kitchen," said Maria Chen, CEO of CulinaryIQ. "The toque is a chef's crown; it was the perfect place to integrate technology that empowers them without being intrusive."
Initial feedback from expo attendees has been positive. "The communication feature is a game-changer for timing and coordination during a busy service," commented Executive Chef Ben Carter, who tested the prototype. "It keeps the line calm and focused."
